1980 UCL Geography Graduate reunion

30 years on

A group of 1980 UCL Geography graduates gathered in the department for an informal reunion on April 17th. Two managed to arrive from Brazil and the USA, but participation by several others was frustrated by the international transport impacts of the Icelandic volcano. As is usual among geographers they had developed successful careers in many fields, as accountants, lawyers, politicians, teachers, and in business, the civil service, local government and social work.

The party was greeted in the Pearson Building by Peter Wood and Hugh Clout, representing the staff who had taught them at an important time in the department’s history. In 1979 they had all been involved in the move from its old base in Foster Court to the newly-built 26 Bedford Way. A brief tour of the recent Pearson facilities was followed by a more nostalgic trip to the old sites, including the still-familiar Bedford Way lecture theatre and the Map and Reading rooms.

A session of bowling followed across Bedford Way, in the Bloomsbury Lanes, and further conviviality extended into the evening.
