International and European refugee law
This course focuses on the evolution of international refugee protection, its institutional and policy framework as well as its regional applicationin Europe.
A broad outline of the topics to be covered includes:
- International instruments for the protection of refugees
- Definitions, exceptions and relevant national practices and applications
- Institutional actors, policy development and current challenges
- European protection of refugees – Regional instruments of refugee protection: the ECHR and the EU Common European Asylum System.
- refugee law.
The course aims: to familiarize students with relevant background information relating to refugee issues in a interdisciplinary perspective; to enable students to be competent on the general development and the various contexts of application of refugee law; to develop the students’ ability to think independently and to critically analyse controversial aspects of the international and European refugee regime, as well as being able to apply this knowledge to practical cases
