Economics of migration

This course is an introduction to the economic aspects of migration. It will discuss some of the most important contributions to migration research in economics, and point out links between the different areas of analysis. It will discuss empirical evidence within clearly structured economic models. At every stage, analysis will be linked to the current debate on migration.

The course consists of 10 lectures, each lecture lasting 2 hours, and is structured into three main parts:

  • Part I (the migrant experience) discusses the migrant’s experience in the host economy.
  • Part II (the non-migrant experience) inspects consequences of migration on those who do not migrate, in both host- and home countries.
  • Finally, Part III (identity and aspects of social cohesion) discusses the interaction of the immigrant population with residents of the host country. Readings: Mostly paper; reading list will be provided.

Prerequisites.  This course requires a background in economics at undergraduate level.

Assessment: The course consists of 2 hours of lectures per week and 4 problem classes with written assignments. There is a 2-hour written exam in Term 3.
