Rebecca Collins
My PhD research, driven by the increasing focus on a societal shift towards more sustainable consumption, aims to build a picture of UK adolescents' material consumption that moves beyond recent preoccupations with acquisition. By focusing on decisions to divest, dispose of and/or waste personal items, my research examines how different ways of moving items out of spheres of engagement reflect young people's relationships with material objects. By deepening understanding of young people's motivations for 'getting rid' of items, I suggest that important facets of their attitudes towards personal material consumption are revealed, knowledge that is arguably well placed to illuminate the as yet under-researched intersection of youth consumption and sustainable consumption.
