  • Pollution and climate change impacts on mountain lakes : Atmospheric pollution of upland lakes and streams - the catchment processes and mechanisms influencing the sensitivity/acid-base status of surface waters; critical loads developments (evaluation and application); the role of Nitrogen deposition. Climate change effects. Impacts on aquatic biodiversity
  • Application of multivariate numerical techniques  The use of multivariate statistical techniques to evaluate and quantify relationships between catchment characteristics and surface water chemistry and physico-chemical attributes and freshwater biology
  • Regionalisation: The use of GIS and empirical modelling techniques to apply process based models at a regional scale allowing those relationships identified at a site-specific level to be extrapolated to populations of sites. This work is currently being undertaken using for mountain lakes across Europe. Increasingly available high resolution digital datasets will facilitate wider application of this approach.
