Research

My research interests lie within Population and Urban Geography and my his work focuses on investigating new research methods to study ethnicity/ identity, migration and socio-spatial inequalities in contemporary cities, with a view to informing public policy. My recent work has focused on residential segregation, categorisations of ethnicity, dual citizenship, the geography of names, and the spatial analysis of populations and neighbourhoods in the UK, Spain, US and Mexico. You can read more about my work under the publications section, or in my personal webpage

Biography

I am a Lecturer in Human Geography at the Department of Geography, University College London (UCL), where I am associated with the research group on Mobility, Identity and Security (through the Migration Research Unit) and the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA).

Current research:

For details about my current work please see my research page.

My background:

I completed my PhD in 2007 at UCL with the topic 'The ontology of ethnicity based upon personal names: with implications for neighbourhood profiling'. In it I developed an improved ontology of ethnicity that maps into reliable measures at the level of the individual, using such measurements to improve public service delivery and support policy applications at neighbourhood level. Prior to that, I obtained a distinction in the MSc in GIS and Human Geography at the University of Leicester in 2004, with a dissertation entitled "Mobile phones; the new cellular geography", developing an alternative method of measuring population mobility in contemporary cities. My undergraduate training consists in two separate degrees in Business Studies (Hull/Madrid, 1994) and in Geography (Madrid, 2001). After a successful management career of 10 years in the logistics sector in several countries, in 2003 I undertook a career change to prepare myself to work in academic research. For more details, see my full academic Curriculum Vitae.
