Charlotte's empirical expertise is principally located in urban South Africa (with a secondary focus on urban India), focusing on post-apartheid transformation, particularly issues related to human (in)security, urban integration, urban poverty, governance, housing (high- and low-income) and migration.

• Advisor to United Network of Young Peacebuilder (UNOY Peacebuilders) on "Building Peace in Africa: urbanisation and human security" symposium (2008)
