Latest expedition to Lake Baikal

Dr Anson Mackay, together with Nottingham colleagues, will be undertaking an expedition on frozen Lake Baikal in March.

The main goal will be to extract the mud archive from the bottom of this spectacular lake, the deepest in the world, to assess the impact of recent global warming and pollution. The region is currently experiencing some exceptionally cold temperature (-39 C), so conditions are expected to be challenging.

To double the challenge, Anson will also run in the 9th Baikal Ice Running Marathon on 3rd March. This aims to raise wareness for ecological sustainable development of the Lake Baikal region, and to promote responsible recreation.
