The stunning blood vessels of our planet
Helene Burningham on spectacular satellite photographs of world deltas
Dr Helene Burningham’s comments on a series of spectacularly beautiful satellite photographs of some of the 40 major river deltas across the world were published by several national newspapers on May 8th, including The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, The Sun and The Huffington Post.
The photos show the huge variety of forms associated with river deltas, which often resemble branching blood vessels. Helene reminds readers that from such a distance it is difficult to imagine that 500 million people live along their banks, with their vulnerability to natural disasters and sea level rise.
