Latest European Migration Trends

On November 28-30th, Professor John Salt attended the Paris annual meeting of the OECD Expert Group on Migration as Correspondent for the UK.

He presented the Annual Report for the UK, including details of migration stocks, flows and policy and also led a discussion on family and humanitarian migration.

The meeting, attended by representatives of some 35 countries, provided an opportunity to exchange data and ideas about new and emerging issues relating to migration patterns across the OECD and associated states. Perhaps surprisingly, within Europe there seems to be little evidence of large recent emigration flows from the distressed economies of southern Europe. Across the continent as a whole migration flows are relatively stable. Unlike the UK, however, other countries are generally seeking to attract international students and to encourage them to stay on and enter the workforce.

The report will be available on the UCL Migration Research Unit website.
