Assessing Impacts of Climate Change and Human Activities on Groundwater Resources
Richard Taylor invited to speak at UNESCO Workshop in China
Dr Richard Taylor has been invited to serve as an instructor on a UNESCO training course at Sun Yatsen University in Guangzhou, China. The course, Methods for Assessing Impacts of Climate Change and Human Activities on Groundwater Resources – focus on Asia, runs from 31st October to 4th November and is designed to provide training to young post-doctoral researchers examining the impacts of climate change on groundwater resoures in SE Asia.
The course is organised by the UNESCO GRAPHIC programme, of which Richard is a core member, and the IAH Commission on Groundwater & Climate Change, which he co-chairs. He will speak about his recent DFID-funded research, drawing from both observational records and modelling, on the impacts of the intensification of rainfall under global warming on groundwater recharge. He will also examine the sustainability of groundwater abstraction for dry-season irrigation in Asian Mega-Deltas and the fallacy of the safe yield concept. The last topic will draw on research by the recent UCL Geography PhD graduate, Dr. Mohammad Shamsudduha.
