Groundwater resilience in sub-Saharan Africa
Richard Taylor leads DFID-sponsored study
Dr Richard Taylor is to lead a UK Department for International Development (DFID) sponsored study of the sustainability of intensive groundwater abstraction for town water supplies and irrigation in East Africa. He will working with the British Geological Survey and the Ministries of both Water and the Environment in Uganda, as well as the Ministry of Water & Irrigation in Tanzania. He will analyse existing monitoring data and determine the age of groundwater currently being pumped from production wells. The results are expected to indicate how actively groundwater is circulating in the low-yielding aquifers underlying approximately half of the sub-Saharan Africa.
