Busy summer for Pablo Mateos
Invited to meetings in Paris, Tel-Aviv and Amsterdam, Oxford and Exeter
Several invited talks given by Dr Pablo Mateos over the summer included papers at a segregation workshop at the University of Paris 8 and the International Geographical Union regional conference in Tel-Aviv, and a keynote address to a conference at the University of Amsterdam.
Seminar « Urban Frontiers / Les frontières de la ville» , Institut Francais de Geopolitique, Universite Paris 8, 18 June 2010
This seminar evaluated evidence about immigrant spatial concentration in Europe and its alleged effects on social integration, focusing on measurement issues in the UK, Netherlands, France and Spain. Pablo presented his work on names and ethnicity as an alternative method to study residential segregation in various countries. Other speakers included Professor Ceri Peach (Oxford University), Professor Ron Johnston (University of Bristol), and Professor Sako Musterd (University of Amsterdam)

Urban Commission at the IGU Regional Conference, Tel Aviv, July 12 -16, 2010
The session was organised by the IGU Urban Commission, and Pablo’s presentation compared levels of ethic residential segregation between the US and the UK. The paper was co-authored with Professor John Iceland, Penn State University, and covered over 500 metropolitan areas in both countries. It will be published soon in the Journal of Urban Affairs.
"The essence of the urban" conference, University of Amsterdam, 24 September 2010
This conference addressed scholarly questions about the changing form and role of cities and the analytical focus of Urban Studies as a discipline. Pablo’s keynote talk, entitled Digital cities and volunteered geographies: Innovative methods in urban studies, proposed alternative research methods in urban studies, illustrating with examples from his own research and that of UCL’s Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA). These indicated new hybrid approaches for studying the ‘urban’, using techniques that seek to bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative methods.

Pablo also gave two other talks during the summer; at the ESRC Research Methods Festival in Oxford, and at the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS) conference at the University of Exeter.
