Superheroes and nationalism
Jason Dittmer receives support for Canadian research
Dr Jason Dittmer has received a grant from the Canadian High Commission entitled 'Fighting for Canada: Canadian nationalist superheroes of the Second World War'. This is an extension of ongoing comparative research into nationalist superheroes from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. It seeks to theorize the role of popular culture in the construction and maintenance of nationalism, utilizing discourse analysis of the text and visual content of wartime comic books and audiences' letters to the editor. The funding will enable two weeks of data collection from rare Canadian WWII comic books that are only available in the Canadian Library and Archives in Ottawa.
