Improving the accuracy of albedo from satellite data
Philip Lewis to present new ideas at Beijing conference
Professor Philip Lewis will be attending an international conference on Land Surface Radiation and Energy Budgets held in Beijing Normal University, Beijing, March 18-20 (http://landenergybudget.org/LED/default.htm).
One main focus of the conference is to discuss progress in the estimation and validation of surface albedo from satellite data. Lewis will be presenting some new ideas that Dr. Tristan Quaife and he have been working on to improve the accuracy and temporal resolution of albedo (and related quantities) through consideration of temporal smoothness, building on a paper recently submitted to IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. The method is particularly useful at times or in regions of high cloud cover where opportunities to view the surface from satellites are diminished.
