Looking Beneath Our Feet
Roger Flower examines the natural, cultural and historical past of the site on which the new Institute for Cultural Heritage (IfCH) is being built.
The new Institute, which is being built at UCL adjacent to the Bloomsbury Theatre, is designed to promote heritage globally and is going to mark a new dimension for heritage studies at UCL. Roger Flower's article, co-written with Robert Taylor of Soil Mechanics Ltd, discusses the natural and cultural past of the site on which the IfCH is going to stand - its historical and cultural background, historical geography and environmental history, and its implications for the future. The authors hope that some of the intellectual impetus generated by the new Institute will help to both integrate our cultural and natural heritages, and promote harmony where culture and landscape are now in conflict.
