MRU receives research grant for analysis into labour immigration to the UK
The Migration Research Unit (MRU), with the University of Warwick, has received a research grant from the Learning and Skills Council to make an analysis of recent labour immigration to the UK.
The research was carried out by John Salt, Janet Dobson and Viktorija Bauere. The analysis has shown that the UK is very actively participating in the global expertise market and at several skill levels.
Over the last decade or so there have been major shifts in numbers, routes of entry, economic sector participation and occupational balance. These trends have led to historically high foreign labour stocks, with about two million foreign citizens working in the UK in 2007. In 2006, around 450,000 labour migrants entered the UK under the various routes of entry, many of them to work short term.
